What does a blood glucose meter do?
A blood glucose meter is a test to measure the amount of glucose, or sugar, in the blood. This is a quantitative test that accurately displays the amount of glucose from a small blood sample. Diabetics are unable to regulate their own blood glucose levels so they must check and maintain their levels themselves with a blood glucose meter. The results from the meter help diabetics know when to make adjustments to diet, exercise and medicine. Without consistent glucose testing, a diabetic may be at risk of seizures, blindness, kidney disease and nerve damage.
How do I get a Blood Glucose Meter?
Blood glucose meters have become smaller and more accurate in recent years and are readily available through a number of venues.
Ask your doctor:
Your doctor can tell you which meter is right for you, as well as suggest a pharmacy that carries it.
Check your pharmacy:
Most pharmacies carry blood glucose meters that range in price from $10.00 – $30.00. Ask a pharmacist to help you find a meter that is covered by your insurance, or a model that you can afford.
Ask your health insurance provider:
Most insurance providers cover the cost of blood glucose meters. There are laws in place that require insurance companies to cover the cost of certain diabetic products. Medicare covers about 80% of diabetic supplies.
Shop online:
You can search the internet to find a blood glucose meter that meets your specific needs such as size, features and pricing. When shopping, be sure to check pharmacies, blood glucose meter manufacturers, or blood glucose metering systems.
Will my insurance pay for it?
Most insurance companies, including Medicare, cover the price of blood glucose meters. Check with your insurance provider before choosing a meter because some providers only pay for meters manufactured by certain companies.
After consulting your insurance company, have your doctor or pharmacist help you choose a blood glucose meter. At Pride Pharmacy we have healthcare professionals who will give you personalized service to help sort through your options to find the blood glucose meter that is right for you.
